Kitchen transformation and some thrifty finds and redos

I've always dreamed of a cozy colorful kitchen where you could muster up dreams of Gramma in her cute little apron fussing around with flour flying everywhere.
Bland, boring, dated and dark

Ugly floor

Well, I was determined not to give up on my dreams of an I Love Lucy kitchen so I set out to paint the cabinets white with splashes of red all around. The process is still going on arghhh, painting kitchen cabinets is turning into a career. Here's my progress so far. I removed the cabinet doors, added beadboard wallpaper on the backsplash and even made a plate rack in one of the cabinet openings. I shopped for old items that I could paint red to add a punch of color.
A look at the cabinet before the plate rack

TADA!
See my Goodwill finds? The measuring cup holder which was originally brown now painted red, the little  girl measuring spoon holder sitting on the windowsill?Double Click the picture and you will be able to get a better look. Oh and my Fiestaware finds, love it!
The red and white curtains were a thrift store find for only a dollar .

I found these two rolling pins at a yard sale for a dollar each and the paper towel holder for 25 cents. I painted the paper towel holder and ends of the rolling pin red to go with my retro themed kitchen.

I love all the color now. I'm on the search for some more fiesta ware to fill up that plate rack. See the sweet little chickie pot holder on top of the microwave that Shelia from Note Songs made for me, love her!

I still have half of the upper cabinets to do and all of the lower ones, whew, but I'm loving it so far. Plans are in the works to add a wood floor, a kitchen table and a little surprise that I have in store for you so stay tuned for more updates. See the complete updated redo  by clicking HERE

  2. It's looking good. Really...I think there is no worse job than painting kitchen cabinets. Ok, so are you not putting doors back on at all? I think I'd die if I didn't have doors to hide the mess. And where are all your cups and everyday eating dishes?

  3. Haha, well this will definitely be a test of how well I can keep things in order. It's just my hubby and me now so hopefully we will be able to pull off the no doors look. I'm in the process of getting new everyday dishes and cups in red and white and I'll probably put them where those bowls are.

  8. Your kitchen is charming, and I know what you mean about the process. I have been working on my kitchen for at least three months -- I have lost track. Cabinets are so tedious. The plate rack is a wonderful idea.

  9. Amazing!Good luck for the remaining cabinets. I love the splashes of red. How's the wallpaper on the backsplash working for you? I think it's a great idea, but I'm wondering if it will hold in time?

  11. Thanks for all your sweet comments. The bead board wallpaper is holding up pretty well so far but I may eventually replace it with regular bead board just because I would like a little more depth and dimension.

  18. Your kitchen is looking beautiful! Isn't it fun to "magazine" a home? One of the most challenging things a person can do is "magazine" a mobile home, but you are doing it! And I applaud you for painting those cabinets, that is one tough job!

  20. Wow! You lightened it up and livened it up--helped by all that red, of course!

    FEELING RED

    I am feeling red today—
Better that than blue, they say.

Red is such a cheery shade,
    Sweetest color ever made,

    Brightens everything you do—
Better red, they say, than blue!

  25. I am absolutely loving this Kitchen!
I just redid my Kitchen this past summer . We painted the Kitchen cabinets white, added a chair rial and painted a pale yellow above the rail and red below. Then I put up a border with a red background and yellow roses.
I do admire you for taking your doors off. I don't have a lot of cabinets so I need all the space that I can get and mine would never look so neat.
    Hugs,
    Debbie

  26. What a difference! You'd never know it was a mobile home - it does look like "Grandma's" kitchen!

You're keeping the doors off the top cabinets, right? I did that in my previous home - I'm an "out of sight, out of mind" person; and, besides, why hide all those pretty dishes?!

  27. I love red kitchens! So cheery. I am a new follower.

  28. What a cozy Kitchen! I painted my cabinets(hate that job) and removed some of the doors too! You did a great job!

  29. Adorable! I keep telling my husband we need to paint our cabinets white. I'm def. showing him yours. We have the same colored cabinets.

What did you do before painting them? Did you sand or prime? I wasn't sure how well ours would turn out because of the paper-like stuff on them.

    Awesome job!

  30. Angie, I lightly sanded, not enough to break through that icky paper stuff, just slightly. Then I applied Kitz primer, after that semi gloss water based white paint. It is holding up really well, I can wash the cabinet and they are just fine. I love the way they look now, it's not all dark and dingy and you would never know that under that paint is that cheapy brown stuff. I say DO IT! hugs, Teresa

  34. Love this!

I'll be borrowing your idea of a lamp under the cabinets - I need more light there and how FUN is that to have a decorative lamp rather than bland strip lights under the cabinets...

  35. I love your style! I have always wanted a cozy storybook kitchen, I love your idea with the lamp. I am going to follow you.

  40. YOu are doing a fantastic job. I feel your pain though, as I painted our cabinets last summer and it took forever. I love all the hits of red around the room. I bet you love cooking in there now.

  41. I LOVE your kitchen! I've been thinking of removing our top cupboard doors for some time now, and wondered if you can tell me if you've found any drawbacks to the open cabinet look since removing yours? I've really enjoyed looking at all your pics. You're home is beautiful! PS. I also have lots of red in my kitchen. LOVE red...

  44. I've just found your blog and love it. I REALLY love your kitchen. In my older mobile home I also took the doors off the upper cabinets to display stuff. I loved it. I've just painted my kitchen in our newer mobile home and it's white with red too, but with yellow walls! Such a great retro feel, like you said, very I Love Lucy! I hope there's more pics of your kitchen. :) It's inspiring me to add new things to mine!
