I need some help with my dining room, is the chandy too gaudy? Also the chairs, should I paint them? So finally added the crystals to the chandy in the dining room but now I have a dilemma, should I get rid of the brass finish or keep it? I think I like it but I'm just not sure. I know that brass has been out and now it's supposedly back in even though I don't pay attention to trends when it comes to decorating. I just go with what I like but I dunno. It looks a bit too shiny to me, what would you do? I was thinking I could add some black glazing to it to age it somewhat. What do you think?
The top part is not attached to the ceiling yet, that's what is hanging down on the chain.
I painted the matching one in the living room white and now wish I hadn't ugh!
Also what do you think about the chairs in the dining room, there's way too much brown if you ask me and I'm thinking about painting them a light color, also I'll be padding the seats with foam and fabric. What color do you think I should go with? I'm stumped.
Something's just not right. It just seems so blah in there......Any and all opinions are welcome.
Thanks for your input!

I am no decorator by far, but I think the brass just looks right in your room. I like the brown chairs like the color they are, too. Maybe you could just do the upholstery and add a little bow trim to the chairs to 'lighten' it up a bit. I just recently found your blog again and have enjoyed catching up!! (new house, go YOU!!)
ReplyDeleteI would leave the chandelier the way it is. It contrasts with the ceiling. I would also leave the chairs. I like to see the wood grain! I agree with the previous comment about adding cushions to the chairs for more color. You could also add color with artwork on the walls ( (plates or trays). It is a beautiful room!

I'm FINALLY getting around to visiting some blogs! Well, I've never had a chandy, but to me it's a little too bright. I think the brown furniture is gorgeous, but if you upholster the seats, it would break the color up. What color is the background of that bird picture on the wall? Green? Maybe a green gingham?

I would try to put some darker on the chandy.....but I wouldn't paint those beautiful chairs. I think a bright fabric on the chairs would be really pretty. But as I always add...it is your home...do what your heart tells you!
ReplyDeleteI think the the chandelier and chairs look good like they are but I was thinking a little black glaze on the chandelier and maybe paint the chairs black and cover the seats in a black and white toile who'll d loom really nice. I love the grey on the cabinet to the left alone also. Regardless of what you choose yo do....the room is just lovely! Blessings, Vicky
ReplyDeletefirst, i love the chandys! love the white one, and brass one looks gorgeous in your dining room:)
ReplyDeletei do like your glaze idea to tone down the brass one:) would glaze help you like the white one better?
since you want a lighter look for the chairs, i wouldn't paint them black, but the cabinet grey color might be lovely:) go with you heart, teresa--love your style:)
I would leave the chandy as is and add a cord cover. I like to use silky fabrics for the cord covers; I've even used vintage scarves on some. Love the chairs as is, too. If you want to add color, use a bright color for the cushions. I'd choose a large floral w/red background if I were doing the room. You can also get double duty by using coordinating fabrics on the cushions. . . floral on one side and a low key coordinate on the other. If you're not into florals, there are some great updated damask patterns available. Waverly has some great choices. For a little more spark, add faux picture hangers of ribbon or cord from the picture rail to the two pictures on either side of the cabinet. You've got great furniture; the only thing I'd add would be some bold color accents.
ReplyDeleteSorry mom, I know you love that bamboo rug but I think that might be why it looks like there is too much brown. That's all I would change everything else is beautiful. As always your house looks like it belongs in a magazine :-P
ReplyDeleteWhat if you switched out the chandy's since you don't like the white one in the living room, then paint your chairs gray and white to go with the chandy and the cabinet? How would that be? Good luck on whatever you decide.
ReplyDeleteI like the chandy in the dining room. It appears to be "real" brass and not the ultra shiny fake brass. If a magnet sticks to the chandy it is solid brass and not brass plated or fake. There are ways/products to add patina but I have never tried any of them. I don't like the white one as much. I agree with your daughter, change out the bamboo rug for one with some color then add some cushions and maybe even a runner on the table. I think I'd leave the chairs and table the wood tone for now. The room is lovely, by the way. I love to have an old house to re-do.
ReplyDeleteTeresa,
ReplyDeleteI love the chairs natural but I agree with Lynn maybe the gray from the cabinet would be a nice color for the chairs. I think a glaze on the chandy would tone it down some and I think you would like it better. I love the white one but you know me and white!!!!! Go with what your gut tells you and that way you will love it. It is only paint so if you try something and don't like it hey it is only paint and you can repaint it!! Good luck I cannot wait to see what you do.
Kris
Well, a cord cover on the light, lower the light, maybe a ceiling medallion, crystal cut light bulbs, remove the crystals or pearls that hang inside the chandy, DO NOT put anything on the light such as stain or wax! Paint the cabinet a different color, cushions or simple tied on covers for the chairs, a different rug. Curtains with more volume, longer and possibly a color. That's all I can see. Good luck.
ReplyDeleteI love how you painted the other Chandelier white, it looks beautiful! I would paint the other one white too. I would paint the chairs gray, the same as your china cabinet.

ReplyDeleteI am new to your blog and I love your before home and your new home.....!!
ReplyDeleteOh wow , it all does look pretty! I kinda like the brass too and usually i don't like brass. You know, maybe you should paint your chairs gray, and then just tone down the brass on the chandy with a glaze. I agree that there does seem to be alot of brown. I've seen chairs in gray and they look beautiful, plus the gray is also in your little cabinet. I guess if you decide to paint them, picking the color of gray would be the next dilemma. Annie Sloan paints have some wonderful grays... but knowing you, you could make your own!

Teresa,
ReplyDeleteI LOVE that chandelier! I would totally keep the brass....but what about adding some silver bling in there to tone down the metal a little. Also...you could move down the chandelier a little closer to the table. A good rule of thumb is 30" - 34" above the table!
What about painting the chairs gray and then making a simple slipcover that ties on the back of the chairs and paint a three letter monogram on the slipcover? Just an idea!
You have the best taste....so whatever you decide will be perfect!
Happy New Year!

I love your blog & your new home is just dreamy. I'm still trying to catch up, so I may be a little off on your style...But, is your antique cabinet a pale grey or a taupe? If pale grey, I would paint the chandy black with a satin finish, leave the crystal on, & add some tiny black & white gingham shades. I would paint the side chairs black with a satin finish, & reupholster then in a larger gingham or lattice pattern in black & white. I would add white slip covers to the head chairs. I hope this helps.
